So, back to the kidney stone. One morning a couple weeks ago I woke up with what felt like a UTI. I was uncomfortable but not in much pain. I called my doctor and was told to go get a urine test done. Since I wasn't really in too much pain I decided to run some errands before heading over to my doctor's office. As I was out and about, I started to get more and more uncomfortable. It eventually got to the point where I was so uncomfortable I felt like I just needed to go home and rest before heading to my doctor's office. Right after I got home the pain became really noticeable. At this point I was still thinking I just had a bad UTI, so I called Jeff and asked him to come home during his lunch break so I could run to my doctor's office and not have to bring Morgan along (my doctor's office is at the hospital, so it is always a bit of a pain to park and hike to the office with a doddeling toddler in tow. This was also part of the reason I put off going to get the urine test done for so long that morning). Once Jeff got home I was in even worse pain, so we decided it would be best to just go to the ER and see what was happening.
We got to the ER and after I was triaged we were told to head to the waiting room as they were really busy that day. During the time we sat in the waiting room, my pain became unbearable. I was soon a sobbing, writhing in pain mess, so they rushed me back to a room. It took them a couple of hours to get my pain under control and during that time I was having contractions most likely brought on by the stress of it all. Ultimately, I ended up being admitted overnight by my OBGYN to monitor the baby and manage my pain until the stone passed.
I'm not usually into taking selfies, but I thought I would document how rough I looked :-)
It was weird being in a labor and delivery room all night but not expecting a baby anytime soon!
The goods
After it was all said and done my contractions stopped and both the baby and I were okay, which I am so grateful for. The worst part now is just the fear of having another stone. They did an ultrasound on my kidney's at the hospital and did not see any stones waiting to pass, so the hope is that no new ones develop and I can have a stress-free remainder of this pregnancy. My doctor can't really explain why I've suddenly started developing kidney stones when I've never had a problem with them before, other than it is more common in pregnancy and therefore most likely related to pregnancy in some way.
It was an interesting experience and I must say I hope to never have to feel that kind of pain ever again!
